"Unapproved Names" are names that are not approved for standard labeling and fail to indicate the URMIS approved name for a meat cut.
The names fall into six different groups:
- Unapproved Anatomical names that do not follow the anatomical structure of the URMIS system
- Unapproved Cooking names that are related to a cooking method
- Unapproved Fanciful names that are colorfully descriptive, glamorous and indicate that the cut is of better quality, more tender or of greater value than it actually is
- Unapproved General names that are commonly used to describe cuts of meat. The names are shortened versions or popular in a given region of the country
- Unapproved Regional names that are named after a geographic region
- Unapproved Rib names used to describe all types of ribs
The unapproved names may be deceptive and misleading to a consumer and add to the perplexing and frustrating experience of shoppers. The names were developed more for sales promotion or coined as an expression or common term rather than for identification purposes.
