STANDARDS ORGANIZATIONS

Implementing and maintaining current standards in the meat and poultry industry is a complex process. Providing a platform to synchronize today’s standards into the global standards of tomorrow presents even more of a challenge. To achieve this the industry relies upon the expertise and resourcefulness of a variety of standards organizations. These organizations include international as well as U.S. organizations.

mpXML is a non-profit  standards organization  governed by elected representatives from different segments of the meat and poultry industry. mpXML works to establish the standardization and synchronization needed to effectively track variable measure meat & poultry products.  mpXML integrates existing standards from different standards organizations into the GS1 core attributes ensuring the proper classification of products.  Through standardization and synchronization, mpMXL also works to provide the proper interchange of electronic data providing ground work that can link all segments of the meat and poultry supply chain.

As global commerce is conducted on a daily basis, averages of five-billion bar codes are scanned daily. GS1 has been the industry leader in building and managing bar code standards over the past 30 years. GS1 US is a non profit standards organization and member of the GS1 global network. GS1 US is a industry leader in standardization and synchronization systems. The GS1 standardization and synchronization system is the most widely used supply chain system in the world. Through allocation of unique numbers to bar codes and proper data synchronization, the GS1 system allows products to be identified any where in the global supply chain.

Industry-Wide Cooperative Meat Identification Standards Committee

ICMISC is the democratic overseeing body that sanctions standardization of the URMIS system. ICMISC was formed over 30 years ago consisting of representatives from all segments of the meat industry.  ICMISC was responsible for the development of the URMIS meat standardization system, eliminating consumer confusion over the labeling of meat products. ICMISC is responsible for the ongoing integrity of the system, revisions, and the approval process of new cuts being added to the system.
