The Uniform Retail Meat Identity Standards (URMIS) is a consumer oriented identification system that was developed to simplify and standardize the perplexing array of fresh meat cuts and their names. The URMIS system is based on the “Consumer’s Right to Know” what he or she is buying. For more information on the URMIS click here.
Over the years updates to the URMIS system are conducted to insure that the system keeps up with changes in product merchandising and identification and to improve the system for consumers. The last update to the system was conducted in 2002.
The ULTRA Initiative was started in 2010. The goals for the Initiative are:
- Conduct a complete review of the Uniform Retail Meat Identity Standards Program
- Incorporate changes made in the industry to product merchandising and identification
- Improve the system for consumers
- Conduct consumer research to determine consumer acceptance
- Determine if the system can be integrated with food service and culinary product identification
- Instigate industry adoption
- Create an URMIS training program that incorporates the changes
The URMIS review will be directed through the Industry-Wide Cooperative Meat Identifications Standards Committee (ICMISC). The Committee (ICMISC) is a consortium of retailers, suppliers, government agencies, and industry professionals who oversee the development and implementation of the URMIS system. The ICMISC will conduct conference calls and webinar meetings starting in April 2012. If you have participated in the ICMISC in the past you will be notified of the meetings.
